The Queens Cinema

10-12 Queens Street, Southsea

1914-1949

The Queens Cinema, Queens Street, was opened as Queens Cinema Theatre. The Queens closed in 1931 after the owner committed suicide, caused by the non-arrival of films for Easter Monday, and falling receipts caused by news of the proposed Portsea clearance scheme. In December 1931 the cinema was reopened with sound film equipment, then in 1932 was renamed The New Queens Cinema. Despite it's close proximity to Portsmouth Dockyard, it survived WWII, but not the redevelopment of the area.
